Iona Aiken, 79, was charged with aggravated child abuse after striking her great granddaughter four times in the head with a metal hammer on Monday before the mother rushed the child to a neighbor for help, police said.

A sudden and violent hammer attack nearly turned tragic for a 10-year-old Miami girl.

Her 79-year-old great grandmother went berserk and bashed youngster in the head with a hammer Monday while she was playing with her tablet and listening to music on headphones, police said.

The 10-year-old girl was rushed to a neighbor in southwest Miami, who helped staunch the bleeding before the girl was taken to an area hospital, NBC South Florida reported.

Police arrested Iona Aiken and charged her with aggravated child abuse.
